Why STEM is the go-to choice for international students in the US: A deep dive into science, tech, engineering, and math trends
International students in the US are increasingly drawn to STEM disciplines, with a remarkable 57% opting for studies in science, technology, engineering, and math. This surge is fueled by the rising global need for expertise in fields such as computer science and AI, further supported by initiatives like OPT that grant valuable work opportunities post-graduation.

STEM, the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, continues to dominate international student choices in the United States. According to the OpenDoors 2025 report, over 57% of international students in the US are enrolled in STEM programs, highlighting the country’s leadership in advanced education and research. For many students, STEM represents more than classroom learning—it offers hands-on experience, access to cutting-edge labs, and career pathways that are hard to match elsewhere. Programs like Optional Practical Training (OPT) further enhance the appeal, allowing graduates to gain professional experience in high-demand industries.

STEM as the passport to the future

The popularity of STEM among international students is closely tied to global workforce trends. Fields such as computer science, engineering, biotechnology, and data science are in high demand worldwide, reflecting the skills employers actively seek. US universities combine rigorous academics with research opportunities in innovation hubs, giving students practical exposure that goes far beyond textbooks. As highlighted by Brookings in 2024, the OPT extension for STEM students—which allows up to 36 months of work after graduation—makes the US particularly attractive for international talent seeking professional experience.

    From Classroom to Career Launchpad

STEM education offers a clear career trajectory, amplified by programs like OPT. Graduates gain hands-on experience in high-tech fields such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy, robotics, and biotechnology. This experience significantly boosts employability. Research from the ERIC database shows that STEM graduates report average starting salaries of around $75,000, compared to $48,000 for non-STEM graduates, highlighting the strong return on investment from a STEM degree.International students also benefit from H-1B visa pathways after OPT, allowing them to work longer in the US, which contributes to their integration into key industries, according to Brookings (2024).

    Where innovation meets opportunity

US universities are at the forefront of global research, and international students play a pivotal role. The Science & Technology Policy Institute (IDA) reports that approximately 44% of US STEM doctorates are awarded to foreign-born students, demonstrating the significant contributions of international scholars. Many of these graduates work on high-impact projects in AI, biotechnology, robotics, and sustainable technologies, helping maintain America’s competitive edge.Furthermore, foreign-born STEM graduates are increasingly shaping industries and research trends globally. According to the American Immigration Council, 23.1% of all US STEM workers are immigrants, emphasizing their integral role in the workforce and in driving innovation.

    Why STEM wins every time

Beyond individual advantages, STEM international students serve a strategic role in the US economy. The St. Louis Fed highlights that 20.7% of foreign-born individuals with bachelor’s degrees work in STEM, compared to just 11.4% of US-born graduates. This shows that international students bring specialized skills that are in high demand, especially in industries critical for innovation.Institutional support also plays a role: many universities offer scholarships, research assistantships, and funded programs for STEM students, making these programs accessible while fostering career and research opportunities, as noted by GoGradGlobal (2024).

    The bottom line

STEM remains the go-to choice for international students because it merges academic excellence, research opportunities, and career pathways. With access to OPT, cutting-edge research labs, and globally recognized degrees, STEM education in the US provides a launchpad for professional growth and global impact. Choosing STEM is not just about earning a degree—it is a strategic step toward building a future-ready career while contributing to global technological advancement.
