At least 14 states have declared states of emergency as massive winter storms are expected to impact more than 170 million people across the US. The National Weather Service said it could bring “catastrophic ice accumulation” and could result in long-duration power outages, extensive tree damage, and extremely dangerous or impassable travel conditions,” including in many states less accustomed to intense winter weather. More than 1,800 weekend flights have already been canceled, according to the tracker Flightaware, including many in Texas.

Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia have declared a state of emergency for this weekend.
