Indian ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is currently undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Sydney hospital after suffering a serious internal injury during the third ODI against Australia. The incident took place when Iyer sprinted backward from the point position in an attempt to catch Alex Carey, but collided awkwardly, injuring his left rib cage. Though he initially managed to walk off the field, Iyer soon complained of severe pain and discomfort in the dressing room, prompting immediate medical attention from team doctors.Subsequent scans revealed a laceration in his spleen, leading to internal bleeding. The impact caused his vital signs to drop sharply, and emergency care was administered. The spleen, a delicate organ located in the abdomen, can cause significant internal bleeding when damaged, making Iyer’s injury particularly concerning.According to the BCCI’s official statement, Iyer sustained “an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region” and “a laceration injury to the spleen.” The statement confirmed that he remains medically stable and under specialist supervision in Sydney, with the Indian team doctor staying by his side to monitor his condition daily. While his recovery timeline depends on medical progress, Iyer is expected to remain in the ICU for at least two more days. The BCCI is expediting arrangements for his family to travel to Sydney as he continues treatment. The incident, which began as a spectacular fielding effort, quickly turned into a medical emergency that left teammates and fans deeply concerned.Support and well-wishes have flooded social media since the news broke. Akash Chopra wrote, “Get well soon, Sarpanch Shreyas.” His IPL franchises also shared messages — KKR posted, “Wishing you a speedy recovery,” while Delhi Capitals added, “Shreyas is a fighter; he’ll fight through this too.” Rajiv Shukla expressed, “Wishing Shreyas Iyer a quick recovery. His unwavering spirit and commitment to the game are truly admirable. Looking forward to seeing him back on the field soon, stronger than ever.” For now, doctors say Iyer’s condition is stable but continues to require close monitoring in the coming days.
