Ranveer Singh recreating Rishabh Shetty's 'Kantara' scene irks netizens; say it was 'unnecessary and disrespectful'

Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has attracted attention once again, this time over his comments at the closing ceremony of IFFI 2025 in Goa on Friday. While the star spoke about a range of topics, including his upcoming release ‘Dhurandhar’, it was his remarks on Rishabh Shetty and his recreation of a scene in the film ‘Kantara’ that has raised eyebrows. During the ceremony, Singh praised actor-filmmaker Rishabh’s performance in the film which made waves at the box office on its release last month. The sequel to the acclaimed 2022 blockbuster has grossed over Rs 800 crore worldwide, with Shetty’s portrayal once again winning praise and appreciation.

    Ranveer recreates Rishabh’s ‘Kantara’ scene

However, as soon as videos from the event went viral online, Ranveer found himself under the scanner. In the video, he says, “It was an outstanding performance, especially when a ghost female gets inside your body. That one performance…”While attempting to praise Shetty’s performance and intensity during a the film’s iconic climax, Singh briefly imitated the scene on stage. However, given the cultural and religious significance of the sequence, his act was viewed by many as ‘inappropriate’.

    Social media reactions

Clips from the event circulated quickly, lead to criticism with netizens saying, “Ranveer’s reaction to the Kantara scene really felt unnecessary and disrespectful.” Another expressed displeasure with facepalm emoticons and informed the actor, “Chavundi is Goddess not ghost…”Fans were quick to defend the star saying, “If u are blaming ranveer, blame others too They were aslo laughing.”Another added, “Rishab himself was laughing. Don’t make everything controversial.”

‘Dhurandhar’ in controversy ahead of release

This comes at a time when ‘Dhurandhar’, is just days away from its release on December 5. The action film, which won praise for its bloody, brutal and gory trailer, is already drawing attention online with fans intrigued about the film’s story. Early this week, the film found itself in the center of a growing controversy. According to a report by Bar and Bench, the parents of late Major Mohit Sharma, AC(P), SM, a decorated Indian Army officer posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra and Sena Medal, approached the Delhi High Court seeking a stay on the film’s release over speculation linking Ranveer’s role to Major Sharma. Responding to the Sharma family, Dhar issued a formal clarification, “Hi, sir – Our film Dhurandhar is not based on the life of braveheart Major Mohit Sharma AC(P) SM. This is an official clarification. I assure you, if we do make a biopic on Mohit Sir in the future, we will do it with full consent and in complete consultation with the family, and in a way that truly honors his sacrifice for the nation and the legacy it has left for all of us.,
