Angad Bedi and Neha Dhupia surprised everyone by getting married in a small gurudwara ceremony in 2018. They hadn’t spoken about their relationship before, so their wedding came as a shock to many. A few months later, they welcomed their daughter, Mehr. Now, Angad shared how their friendship slowly turned into love and then marriage.
The first time Angad Bedi saw Neha Dhupia
During the conversation at Maneish Paul’s podcast, Angad said, “You slept a bachelor and woke up a married man. The news came out suddenly overnight… which was amazing, ya. So, when did you meet?. There was a gym in Malcha Marg, Delhi, and they used to take me to the gym with them. I had never seen a gym like that, and I saw a fit girl running on the treadmill.”
Their first meeting at the gym
Recalling how it all began, Angad shared the story of his first encounter with Neha. He said, “She was wearing cycling shorts and running a lot. I saw her, and my friends told me, ‘She is Miss India; Neha Dhupia is her name.’ I said that she looks very fit and her running style is very nice. The next day, we again went to see her in the gym, and then again on the third day. My father thought that if I was going to the gym after training, I should be resting. Then, we stopped going for some reason.”
Yuvraj Singh plays cupid
Years later, Angad’s close friend and cricketer Yuvraj Singh ended up playing Cupid between the two. “After a few years, Yuvraj Singh, who is also my father figure and best friend, took me to a party in Mumbai. Neha was also present there; I saw her and greeted her. The bar closed, and we shifted the after-party to my house. We invited her, and I spoke to her properly for the first time there. I shared with her that we used to go to the same gym. As luck would have it, I did a film called Ungli with Dharma, and she also did a part in it. We did another project—she called me for a role, and I said yes because I only wanted to spend time with her. I used to wear my heart on my sleeve. The film was flip, had no value, and was senseless. During the shoot, I told her I like her and she should get married to her.”
When Angad Bedi proposed to Neha Dhupia’s parents
When Angad returned to Delhi, he decided to ask Dhupia’s parents for her hand in marriage, though they left the choice to her. He shared, “I said, ‘I am no one, have no money, but if you will marry me, then I will become something. She didn’t say anything and turned the conversation in another direction. I came home after that film and spoke to her parents about wanting to marry their daughter. They were like, ‘You are such a nice guy, but you don’t even have a single rupee in your pocket and want to marry our daughter?’ I told them that is my intention, and they said, “We’ll see.,
Karan Johar brings them closer
Angad and Neha met again by chance, and this time, Karan Johar was the one who brought them together. “We became good friends and started hanging out with each other. Later on, she went on her path, and I went on mine. As destiny would have it, I used to go to Punjab to shoot for Soorma. She invited me for some Diwali party. She was trying to set me up with somebody else. I said, “Don’t waste my time; my diary is already very full.” Karan Johar was also there,” he shared.
Karan Johar predicts their future together
“Karan said, ‘You’re going places; you guys are meant to be with each other.’ He was the one who got us together. He is a very important part of our lives. Things started changing after that; it changed so much that the engagement and wedding happened so fast. But life is on a good track,” Angad concluded.
A happy ending
On May 10, 2018, Neha and Angad exchanged vows in a low-key wedding ceremony. The couple later welcomed their daughter, Mehr, in 2018, followed by their son, Guriq, in 2021.
