Deepika Padukone has been in the news for her exit from two major movies, ‘Spirit’ and ‘Kalki 2’. Reports suggested that after becoming a mother, the actor sought shorter shifts, a move that reportedly did not sit well with the filmmakers. This has led to a debate on the eight-hour shift demand and if it is fair. Many actors have also shared their perspective on the same. Amidst this, an old video of Deepika’s husband Ranveer Singh speaking about long work hours resurfaced online and started doing the rounds. The clip, taken from an interview conducted three years ago, shows Ranveer sharing his willingness to extend an eight-hour shift to 10–12 hours if it helps complete work efficiently. In a 2022 interaction with Bollywood Hungama, the actor explained that brands place their trust in him because he delivers on his commitments. He added that he has no issue putting in extra hours when required, even though it sometimes leads to complaints from fellow actors who then have to work longer shifts as well.
“A lot of times people complain…other artists and their management complain that ‘Yaar tu sabko badaad raha hai.’ Everyone says, ‘In an 8 hour shift you sometimes shoot for 10-12 hours. Then we also have to do it.’” said Ranveer. He further added, “But now the things that we want are there in 8 hours, we don’t make them too much. You do a little more shooting. I’m not that kind of partner who sees it as a transaction.”Ranveer Singh is currently enjoying the success of his recently released film ‘Dhurandhar’, directed by Aditya Dhar. Speaking at the film’s trailer launch last month, Dhar revealed that the team followed an extremely demanding schedule during the shoot, often working 16–18 hours a day for nearly a year and a half. He noted that despite the intense workload, there were no complaints from the cast or crew.“We have worked 16-18 hours continuously for 1.5 years. Yet, not once did anyone complain about the workload. Everybody has given their 100 per cent, including Ranveer Singh,” the director said.Meanwhile, Deepika Padukone recently spoke to Harper’s Bazaar about how motherhood has reshaped her outlook on work. The actor stressed the need to rethink toxic work cultures and warned against equating exhaustion with dedication.“We’ve normalized overworking. We mistake burnout for commitment. Eight hours of work a day is enough for the human body and mind. Only when you’re healthy can you give your best. Bringing a burnt-out person back into the system helps no one. In my own office, we work eight hours a day, Monday to Friday. We have maternity and paternity policies. We should normalize bringing children to work,” she said.
