Dead-ball drama! Umpire intervenes, bowler forced to re-bowl in India vs Namibia match

NEW DELHI: A dramatic moment briefly stole the spotlight during India’s T20 World Cup 2026 Group A clash against Namibia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Thursday, as an unusual delivery from Namibia skipper Gerhard Erasmus sparked confusion and a heated exchange with the umpire. The incident occurred in the eighth over of India’s innings when Erasmus released the ball significantly earlier than his usual release point — almost from halfway through his run-up.

On-field umpire Rod Tucker immediately ruled it a dead ball, prompting visible surprise and disagreement from the Namibian captain.Earlier in the day, Namibia won the toss and elected to bowl first, as India made two changes to their playing XI. Wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah returned to the side for the defending champions in place of Abhishek Sharma and Mohammed Siraj.India came into the contest after surviving a major scare from the USA in their tournament opener, eventually winning by 29 runs at the Wankhede Stadium. Namibia, on the other hand, were looking to bounce back following a seven-wicket defeat to the Netherlands.Explaining the team combination, India captain Suryakumar Yadav confirmed that Samson and Bumrah, who had missed the previous game due to illness, were fit to return. Abhishek, however, was still recovering after being hospitalized in New Delhi with a stomach infection.“We were looking to bat first. Very happy with it. As long as we are losing the toss and winning the game, we are fine with it. It’s a big tournament, and this dew is going to be a big factor.“But when you bat first and go out and defend, I think it gives you a lot of confidence. It’s a very good wicket. Hopefully, batters go out and enjoy themselves. Abhishek is still not fine; he will miss a game or two. Sanju comes in, similar batter, explosive,” Suryakumar said at the toss.Namibia also ran in two changes, with Malan Kruger and Ben Shikongo replacing Dylan Leicher and William Myburgh. Their captain echoed similar thoughts about the surface. “It is a very good flat cricketing surface, from a surface and dew point of view, it is the right thing to do. It is about tightening our skillset. Looks like a good wicket, try and chase it in the second half. That’s why we play cricket, to entertain,” he said.According to the pitch report by Ian Smith and Nick Knight, pitch number six at the venue was expected to play flat under lights, offering even bounce and good carry. Dew was anticipated to play a role later in the evening, with boundary dimensions ranging from 59 to 73 metres, including a longer off-side boundary for right-handers from the Willingdon End.
