CHENNAI: Two years after history-sheeter Karukka Vinoth, 39, hurled petrol-filled bottle at the Raj Bhavan gate, a special court for National Investigation Agency (NIA) cases in Poonamallee found him guilty and imposed 10-year jail term on him. The incident occurred on Oct 25, 2023.The NIA had charged Vinoth with hurling two petrol-filled bottles on the Raj Bhavan premises, causing an explosion and damaging government property.Following a special report filed by the Guindy police, a case was initially registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Explosive Substances Act, and the Tamil Nadu Property (Prevention of Damages and Loss) Act. Owing to the gravity of the crime, the Union ministry of home affairs transferred the investigation to the NIA, which re-registered the case on Nov 10, 2023. Inspector R Sibin Rajmon was appointed as the chief investigating officer (CIO).
The investigation revealed that Vinoth stole petrol from a motorcycle in SM Nagar in Teynampet, filled it into empty liquor bottles, and walked from Teynampet to Raj Bhavan, where he threw the bombs at around 2.40pm. When police personnel on duty tried to apprehend him, Vinoth threatened them with violence and attempted to flee.Special judge Malarvizhi found Vinoth guilty and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on him.
